  • How much do relief organizations pay for supplies?

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010 and filed under organizations | 1 Comment »

I know that organizations like the Red Cross get a discount for buying supplies like water and food. I’m looking for specific numbers.
Nope. Not at all skeptical. I’m doing a presentation to my Economics classes about relief to Haiti and want to talk about what trade-offs they would be willing to make to donate. For example, would they be willing to give up one $1 bag of hot cheetos if that $1 could be spent on sending 5 gallons of drinking water to Haiti. I was hoping to get numbers to give them a more clear picture of what their donation could buy.

I sence that you are doubtful about the benevolence of humanitarian organizations such as the red cross. Please dont be so skeptical. They do good work. Even if 1/2 of the money raised goes to buy limozines for its Ceo(which I doubt) The organization is still very effective. Skepicism can be directed in many better directions than to those who do good. Why do we have to shine a microscope on every penny that these organizations spend. Yes…I am sure there is some curruption there. There is curruption everywhere. I heard Santa Claus wears womens underwear. But do I criticize him for it? Hell no. The guy does good work!

Can you refer any organizations or corporate businesses to help fund a trip?

I am a 16 year old president of a church youth group. We are planning to go to Philidelphia in July. Right now we are possibly looking at $600 dollars a person. I am trying to find business that will donate cash or something we could use (food or drinks) to help cut some of those cost. Please refer and one willing to help or even fundraising ideas. Thanks.

I traveled as a student ambassador when I was a couple years back, and I had to do a lot of fundrasing. I would recommend meeting with different local business, or writing letters to them explaining what you are raising money for. Local business are a better place to look for help because they are more likely to sponsor things that are in their neighboor. Far as corporate sponsorship I would not recommend it because they recieve a lot of request and it would take a long time to recieve any sporing. Setting up at a craft fair is a good idea. Some of the craft planner will wave the fee. Selling candy like suckers can be good because at craft fair most parents bring kids and there is not much their for the kids. This can also be a good outlet for donates from a community and getting the word out. Newspapers will sometimes publish article that can help get the word out, if you contact the newspaper they might put something in the newspaper about it and this can help get donations.

Your first stop should be the reference desk at the largest library you have access to. There are large volumes that contain info on all the grants and other funding you could want. Ask the reference librarian personally and you will most likely get lots of help (ref. librarians love to get out from behind the desk and work WITH people for a change – at least this has been my experience. Good luck and keep digging.

Can this theory be sued to successfully transform an organization ?

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010 and filed under organization communication | 2 Comments »

1."Organizations, like connectionist networks, have outputs. Strategic-level managers formulate the organization’s interpretation. When one speaks of organizational interpretation one really means interpretation by a relatively small group at the top of the organizational hierarchy…. Upper managers bring together and interpret information for the system as a whole".

"Organizational information processing, as in connectionist nets, is feed-forward. Many participants may play some part in scanning or data processing, but the point at which information converges and is interpreted for organizational level action is assumed to be at the top manager level.
… Below the vice presidential level, participants are not informed on issues pertaining to the organization as a whole.

"The emergent organization: communication as its site and surface", by James R. Taylor, Elizabeth J. Van Every.

2/So Taylor and Van Every say that "Below the vice presidential level, participants are not informed on issues pertaining to the organization as a whole"
mistyped – meant USED, not sued

All you guys need to talk to each other, you all have the same question, office power paths are created to supposedly ensure that low level employees don’t know too much about what goes on in case you decided to sell the idea to a competitor, but it doesn’t help with the overall outcome of the project. Being kept in the dark to protect the project might work is every level of staff did their job, knowing what all the other levels under them were doing – otherwise nothing would ever work :)

what were the main strategies used by the women’s liberation organization?

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010 and filed under organization strategies | 5 Comments »

    The main strategies included:
1 – Publishing writings criticising and analysing the prevailing cultural assumptions about women.
2 – Building grassroots organizations to express women’s political views on both specific and general issues.
3 – Activism toward the academy and the state to implement policies, regulations and laws that address perceived imbalances between men and women in the public sphere.
4 – Demonstrations on hot-button issues although this tactic became less common after the mid-seventies.
Also, there was more than one "Women’s Liberation" organization. It’s misleading to speak as if there was THE movement only.
    Hope this helps.

what are some of the negative effects of competition on a business organization?

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010 and filed under business organization | 2 Comments »

im doing my desertation on competition amoungst businesses.I would love to know all the negative and positive effects on a business organisatition of competition.how can companies overcome such a challenge of competition.

Very interesting topic. Well to start with competition has no positive effects on the business itself. All businesses would rather be a monopoly. However, competition will have great and positive effects on the consumers and the economy but not the business itself.
The negative effects on the business are the following:
    – Cusomers: in any amrket you have a limited number of customers that businesses are competing for, so the more businesses there are the lesser your market share.
    – Resources: Also limited in supply, resources like skilled employees, raw materials and other resources that you might need will become more expensive the more competition you have. You will be competing to acquire those limited resources making the more and more expensive.
    Now the positive effects:
    – Better customer satisfaction
    – More efficient production
    – Better employee remuneration
    – more product variation
    – better and more efficient economy
    – Better value for money
The capitalist economic system is built around competition. it is the main engine that drives markets to operate as the do.
The solution to competition is in one of three ways:
1- product distinction: make your product distinct from your competion so that to appeal to a sertain market segment where you think there are unsatisfied demands.
2- Market or industry access: choose a market that is not saturated yet or industry with a high entry bariers that you can meet (like banking).
3- Produce cheaper: by making you internal processes more efficient or outsourcing, you will be able to beat your competition by lowering your price (but that is only temporary)
You can further expand each of the above issues. well that is all I could come up with for now. Enjoy

Are there any time management/ organization systems that REALLY work?

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010 and filed under organization management | 3 Comments »

I have tried daily planners, calendars, I have a PDA sitting here for 2 years unused (the software is too complicated), gmail’s daily calendar only prints to 5pm, I need to see everything visually so paper systems are good but out of sight out of mind…if I put a paper away, I may never look at it again and I can easily miss a deadline or have to pull weekly all-nighters because I just can NOT seem to keep up. I have to re-write daily tasks multiple times which is annoying and time-consuming, and at the end of the day I am not productive because my system is cluttered and disorganized with too many things to do, and no way to really prioritize by importance…more by urgency. I will return emails or run mindless errands before reading for a midterm. Homework is put off to last spot…which often can mean I’ll start a project due in the early AM at 10pm the night before. It is becoming intolerable. Please, any advice would be extremely appreciated!!
    Thanks so much :)
I am 50% ENFP and 50% ENTP, if that helps– the biggest issues of ENFPs and ENTPs is focus, prioritization, & follow through…go figure. I appreciate the 2 answers below, but it still doesn’t provide an answer I can apply :(

Actually, your problem is most likely not which time managment system you use. To help understand, I’ll explain a little about a personality tool called the Myers Briggs personality assesment. The short of it is that there are people that will naturally tend toward keeping track of things, using check lists, using time management tools (J on the J/P continuim) and then there are people that don’t have the tendency to keep track of time, ie. are late to meetings because they want to get in that last e-mail or voicemail, etc. Time is not important to those people. (P on the J/P continuim) Technical people (at least in Silicon Valley) tend to be P where Bankers, financial people tend to be J. So it could be that you have more of a tendency toward the P type personality. That means using any of the time management tools available is a stretch. Knowing this can help you find out ways to make it easier for you to use these systems and find the right one for you. Just a thought!

How did the current IT organization structure evolve?

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010 and filed under organization structure | 1 Comment »

You have to get more specific with your question. Like are you asking about networking? or just general IT work? because there is no one specific IT organization, there are several layers to it.
