I was recently informed that if you do one year of community service for AmeriCorps you receive an educational award. I desperately need money for college and would enjoy helping organizations in my community but I can’t find any programs in my county or those surrounding me. I called AmeriCorps to ask them how I would find charities in my area and they said to look on the website, which I did but again, there doesn’t seem to be programs in my county. Is there some other organization I could call to find out about the locations of these organizations? Any other information about AmeriCorps would be greatly appreciated. How many volunteer hours are put in each week? It’s going to be tough for me to attend school, work and volunteer but I need the money.
Most AmeriCorps programs are full time so you can’t work, go to school and do AmeriCorps…you can only do one at a time, unless maybe you have a night job.
You have to put in 1,700 volunteer hours in 1 year to get your $4,725 education award and you do get paid, but it’s not much. There are 3 programs:
AmeriCorps*NCCC, where you travel around the US and do a lot of hands on work…you don’t have to have a degree.
AmeriCorps*Vista…where you stay in one place, you already have to have a degree.
AmeriCorps state and national, those you mostly stay in one place, and don’t always have to have a degree, these are sometimes part time too. These are usually hands on, like fire-fighting and forestry, but sometimes habitat for humanity.
You have to search on their website to see if there are any near you…if there aren’t… you are out of luck.
I am asked to list a few charitable organizations (NGO’s) for a corporate doantion from my company. What are the parameters/data should I collect to verify that that donation is going in the right hands?
The organization, if it’s in the USA, should be listed at http://www.guidestar.org; if it’s not, it’s not for real. I’ve got links to other countries’ versions of guidestar at:

The organization should also provide to you:
– the history and mission of the organization
– the financial report of its most recent fiscal year
– statistics showing how many people this organization serves, what impact they have on the community, etc.
– impact statements/testimonials about the organization’s work
– names of board members
– name and credentials of Executive Director, and other key staff as appropriate
– how the organization involves volunteers (involving volunteers shows that the organization allows members of the community to come in and see what the organization does first hand)
– letters of recommendation from OTHER organizations or city or state officials, and/or copies of newspaper articles that profile the organization’s work
– a proposal for what they want to use a donation from your company
This is all BASIC information. 90% of it are things the organization should have in hand ready to hand out at a moment’s notice. A nonprofit that doesn’t have most of these items ready for review is, IMO, not well-run.
Remember that nonprofits have to pay rent on their facilities, pay staff to do their jobs, etc. Please don’t punish an organization for having administrative costs — paying for, say, a copy machine does NOT take money away from those a charity serves. In fact, it may allow an organization to serve even more people.
I ran into someone working with them the other day, and am meeting with him today. The thing is, I want to know if they are legit before I would do any buisness with them. Some things about the circumstances surrounding it (and the meeting with this individual) make me suspicious, but not the whole thing, and it could very well be a legitimate buisiness and a possible opportunity for myself. Or it could be a scam.

Still, it isn’t very in depth. The man claimed that his buisiness worked with companies like Circuit City and Bass Pro (among others), but I don’t know whether these are local stores or the corperations as a whole.
This perticular individual is out of Kansas City. His card indicates his company to be Hook International. It is not copywritten.

I don’t know much about this orginization, although I was approached last week and this lady went over a speil with me at Mc Donalds. I had asked questions pertaining to more information about this "business" and was given no real answer and invited to a seminar, which I attended this evening.
At this seminar, they went over the brochure, which in case you haven’t seen has the same information as the website you listed, with just a little more depth. All I really got out of the seminar was that if I pay them $200 they will help me recruit 6 more people to pay them $200 and they will help each of them recruit 4 people to pay them $200 and they will then help these 4 people recruit 2 more people to, you guessed it pay them $200.
They kept talking about these business that they work for, like Bass pro shop, circuit city, office depot, and such, but when I asked what it is that we do for this company I got no real answer, instead I got more information on how to recruit people to give them $200.
Then I had mentioned to this "sponsor" that I needed more information, and she gave me a folder filled with information about a corporation called Quixtar, and set up a time to meet with me at Mc Donalds again, how proffesional. Quixtar, I checked is a legit business, but as I search for information about LTD, I find nothing. The brochure and folder I recieved have no stamp of LTD, nor does it mention their name anywhere in the information, however it has a vast amount of informaion about Quixtar, even BBB reports. I am going to contact Quixtar tomorrow and see if they know anything about this LTD business.
If you find out anything more please let me know, I to am curious as to see if this is legit, or just another scam.
This is a popular democrat strategy so maybe they should get a taste of their own medicine. Investigate the personal life of the editor of the LA Times and investigate any other top executives in this organization.

I totally agree! FoxNews and other fair media outlets (which are few and far between, considering most are liberal) should definitely dig into the LA Times organization! They also should keep pressing the issue that the LA Times release that video! Americans NEED TO KNOW and have EVERY RIGHT to see what that video is all about! It seems quite odd to me that this isn’t the first time something has come up about Obama and his shady affiliations that has been covered up or the media – and I’m sure it won’t be the last time either!
I noticed that Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco flourished in their rookie seasons because they have a great supporting cast in the falcons rushing game and with the baltimore defense.

No, Ryan and Flacco were both put in good situations. Ryan had Turner to run the ball and they had a decent offensive line. Flacco played on a team that wasn’t going to allow him to cost them games, his job was to hand the ball off and let the defense do the rest.
The problem for Stafford is that the Lions aren’t very good at anything. It was a mistake naming him the starter for the 1st game, because he doesn’t give you the best opportunity to win games now. I see the Lions breaking Tampa’s record of consecutive losses (26).
Business communication allows for contact between the varying levels of management. It allows for the upper management (e.g. the CEO) to talk to the middle management about their overall strategy/goals for the business. It would generally be a sole proprietorship in that multiple people tend to have more capital than individuals. Moreover, groups willing to lend tend to offer more at cheaper rates if they can collateralize against more individuals. Corporations can issue stock or debt to increase capital.

When you allow allignment of strategies to performance you look at common efforts, best efforts, decentralisation, centralisation, feed back and tempo. In decentralisation you gather infromation from the market as new niches or cluster of customers gets formed and is fed back. You allocate resources to serve this new customers or niche through a new budget or a flexi budget. Thus you grow your mission or direct your mission to the new market formed. Proactivity is easily visible in this through earlier direction of mission to the newly forming market the action being initiated prior to the event actully taking place.

Design a revised organization structure that can potentially overcome the difficulties.
John, your question, and your other one, has many other deeper issues about the organization that needs to be disclosed before you can arrive at a simple answer like your are expecting. These deeper issues are things like the organization’s business, it’s operating strategies, mission statements, etc.
If I were you, I’d research first why the organization is a matrix in the first place, what are the driving factors that decided matrix. strengths and weaknesses – do a SWOT , (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats), analysis.
I’d suggest you research on line management sites on what the different organization structures are to see which would be a better fit for your organization. But you must be subjective in your selection, i.e. argue your own conclusions. not easy my friend, but good luck.
