After high school it has always been my dream to go to Darfur and work in a refugee camp. Do you know of any humanitarian organizations that will allow me to go there?
I’ve got in contact with a couple NGO’s that are there right now for volunteering…but it’s almost impossible to volunteer there if you aren’t a professional (doctor, nurse, etc…) b/c a lot of the activities that are needed there usually go to locals b/c they have heavy unemployment…so they pay a lot of people that live in certain area’s of Darfur to do a lot of the work that you are looking to volunteer for.
also what organizations do you know of that send volunteers to refugee camps in Africa.
And without a application fee.

I have to apply to the professional phase of pharmacy school this fall (so im already in college) and i am just looking for some ideas on different activities and organizations that might look good to put on the application. if anyone has had any success with a certain activity or organization it would be greatly appreciated! I already work in a pharmacy, just looking for some extra things to add.
Yikes. That didn’t sound good.
Schools of that level like to see that you’re really dedicated to something you do – they like to see that you put a lot of time and effort into it, and stuck with it for several years. If you have anything like that, you should definitely include it.
Ahh, it’s bad to just add "extra things", if they honestly didn’t have a big impact on your life. Get involved with something that you’re actually really interested in, not just what will look better in the end. You’ll be happier and better off that way.
However, some things which DO look good would be the work in the pharmacy (excellent), any leadership positions you may have, or COMMUNITY SERVICE. Graduate schools love to see community service. So you better go out there and help some needy people :] lol
Good luck! I hope you get in <3
You may not have the dollars the big media organizations have, but you can still have a big impact on journalism. The UpTake lets you in on the secrets of starting a successful citizen journalism organization.

What are some trustworthy NON PROFIT organizations that you know for sure are worth donating money to and that will use 100% of the donations toward the cause of protecting animals? I’m looking for organizations dealing with both pets and wild animals, animal abuse, endangered species, etc. I’m planning on starting my own non profit ‘campaign’ of sorts to support a new non profit organization like this each month. I’m starting with animals, but don’t want to donate money to someone who will use it on something completely unhelpful to the actual cause.
Ok I have to let you know one fact-there are NO charitable organizations/non profits where 100% of the donations go to the actual cause. I look for a range of 80-99%, some people are comfortable going as low as 75% but not me. They may have some events where 100% of what they raise in donations goes to the cause but those are usually underwrtitten by a large donor.
Unfortunately they have expenses too-salaries/insurance/overhead/office supplies-you know the same stuff for profit companies use.
Check your yellow pages or online for a local chapter of what i consider are the best options below:
American Council for the Blind-Guide Dogs
PAWS
PETA
Humane Society
Check on any charity through the better business bureau. Their website is below too.
I hope this helps you
Hey I’m Jessica. I am thinking about doing a foreign exchange my senior year, to either Japan or Australia. Do any of you know all the organizations you can go through to become a foreign exchange student? Which organization, and which country would you choose? Thank ya:)
Rotary has a strong global network of volunteers, so I would definitely check out to your local Rotary Club in addition to the other programs mentioned. If your high school has an Interact Club, that would be a way meet them as well.
I don’t think it would be a problem to go out your senior year (even though you may miss graduation), but since our students usually go out in their junior year of high school or after graduation, I would check with your school and your local Rotary District’s rules to determine if you can go out your senior year.
In our program, we send students to countries where they do not speak the language, so that they have to learn it. This adds to a tremendous and life changing experience. You are allowed to identify your top picks of where you want to go, but there are no guarantees, just that it will not be an English speaking country. I can tell you that Japan is a popular choice.
Please remember that there is an application process and you have to be selected to go.
You can go to www.rotary.org and click on the "Students and Youth" tab at the top of the page for more information.
Good Luck!
The United Nations Organization (UNO) or simply United Nations (UN) is an international organization whose stated aims are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and the achieving of world peace. The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries, and to provide a platform for dialogue. It contains multiple subsidiary organizations to carry out its missions.
There are currently 192 member states, including nearly every sovereign state in the world. From its offices around the world, the UN and its specialized agencies decide on substantive and administrative issues in regular meetings held throughout the year. The organization has six principal organs: the General Assembly (the main deliberative assembly); the Security Council (for deciding certain resolutions for peace and security); the Economic and Social Council (for assisting in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development); the Secretariat ; the International Court of Justice (the primary judicial organ); and the United Nations Trusteeship Council (which is currently inactive). Other prominent UN System agencies include the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The UN’s most visible public figure is the Secretary-General, currently Ban Ki-moon of South Korea, who attained the post in 2007. The organization is financed from assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states, and has six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

I was recently informed that if you do one year of community service for AmeriCorps you receive an educational award. I desperately need money for college and would enjoy helping organizations in my community but I can’t find any programs in my county or those surrounding me. I called AmeriCorps to ask them how I would find charities in my area and they said to look on the website, which I did but again, there doesn’t seem to be programs in my county. Is there some other organization I could call to find out about the locations of these organizations? Any other information about AmeriCorps would be greatly appreciated. How many volunteer hours are put in each week? It’s going to be tough for me to attend school, work and volunteer but I need the money.
Most AmeriCorps programs are full time so you can’t work, go to school and do AmeriCorps…you can only do one at a time, unless maybe you have a night job.
You have to put in 1,700 volunteer hours in 1 year to get your $4,725 education award and you do get paid, but it’s not much. There are 3 programs:
AmeriCorps*NCCC, where you travel around the US and do a lot of hands on work…you don’t have to have a degree.
AmeriCorps*Vista…where you stay in one place, you already have to have a degree.
AmeriCorps state and national, those you mostly stay in one place, and don’t always have to have a degree, these are sometimes part time too. These are usually hands on, like fire-fighting and forestry, but sometimes habitat for humanity.
You have to search on their website to see if there are any near you…if there aren’t… you are out of luck.
